Restarting PROD VMs when using hotadd method

Post by coolgod »

Am just obeying the forum rules..am breaking my questions on different threads :)

Please consider the following scenario:
1. ESXi PROD with Veeam PROXY VM (Virtual Appliance/will use HotAdd transport mode)
2.Replication configured from PROD ESXi to DR ESXi.

I read that the #HotAdd method will attach the hard disk of the PROD VM to the #VeeamProxy VM.and this results in faster processing.this is OK.

Now I want to know what happens if we have to urgently restart the PROD VM while #replication is going on.
Am asking this since the hard disk is attached to the ProxyVM..is there any precaution to take before restarting any PROD VM or we can just restart without any worry..am worying what will happen to the disk which was attached ? is this going to create any trouble?

There should be no issue. The hotadd mode mounts the base disk of the PROD VM while this goes on running of the snapshot. Veeam only cares of the vmdk and vmx files to be replicated, and those are not affected by power states of the VM (technically the vmx file is locked when the VM is powered on, but an internal reboot of the Guest OS does not affect the vmx file, the status of the OS is again transparent to the vmx file).

No issues with hotadd for the powered off VM.

Yes, that's fine and we do appreciate when people post into exciting topics rather than creating new posts.
