DR ::: Restoring config or not?

Post by vleesdoekje »

I was wondering about a DR plan.

We have backups replicated to a cloud provider that purely provides storage via cloud-connect.
Said provider also has a pay-per-day multi-tenant vCloud setup.

Can we restore our whole environment as-is (4 VM's) from a virgin Veeam VM we set up on the vCloud or is the wiser move restoring the configuration backup first?
Is there a way to ensure that the virtual network is backed up and restored properly or do we need to reconfigure this during the restore?

We are small and learning on the go  , this setup seems to be the most cost effective as we cannot afford hiring an external host 24/7.
Downtime can be tolerated for half a day/a day so HA options are not necessary.

Thank you guys in advance!

Hello
VBR configuration backup contains info about backup infrastructure components and objects(hosts, servers, proxies, jobs, backup server settings etc.), backups, sessions performed on the backup server and tapes.
So I believe it makes more sense to restore VMs first, then VBR to keep protecting the infrastructure.
Thanks!

Since you're talking about vSphere - to - vCloud type of restore, your Service Provider will have to provide you with access to vSphere host (to which VMs can be restored) and then import those newly-restored VMs to vCloud environment. Or even perform restoration part himself.

Thanks.

Our setup is vCenter based, does that make a difference?

So basically adding the repo to a virgin VBR, full VM restore the backups and afterward applying the backup config?

Anyhow thanks for the swift replies!

Yes, to restore VBR configuration you need to have VBR server installed and a backup repository with the configuration backup file added.

Speaking about vCD, what kind of resources SP is giving to you? OrgVDC?

Just to be sure - are you willing to restore backed up VMs to the cloud resources provided by SP or do you want to use VB&R installed in SP VCD to restore VMs to your production site?

Thanks.
