Feature request: Log Backup Cache

Post by mkretzer » 1 person likes this post

Hello,

we have very fast growing Transaction Logs on our SQL Clusters (up to 5 TB per day for one Backup - we have several huge ones). Currently we backup logs every 5 Minutes so we are able to handle this transaction log backup load. The logs are very compressible so as soon as Veeam has done the log backup on the VM locally we have only a very small log backup footprint. Also, the Veeam log backup target locally on the SQL VM can be done to slow tier 3 storage.

The problem is that when we have a Veeam maintenance the log backup does not run at all. Here is where the feature request comes in: if the log backup would run independent from the central Veeam Server and repo to a cache on the SQL Server we would prevent exploding transaction logs on the most expensive storage tier.

For backup agents this is already implemented (backup cache) - it would be very nice for log backup as well!

Our first Idea was to use Veeam HA for that. But:
- This is a premium feature (which is not good in itself and should be re-evaluated - why is this not purchasable as a add-on without having to go to premium??)
- Currently it is still kind of unstable
- It would not help with repo maintenance

Hello,

Many thanks for the feedback. The idea makes sense not only for application-aware image-level backups, but for application policies as well. The request has been noted, but I cannot comment on timelines.

Thanks!
