ORACLE backup to VCC
Hi guys,
i have a ORACLE DB on Linux that has to be protected. Veeam server is on v11a latest.
We have an external DBA and at the moment the backup is accomplished via RMAN to a CIFS target.
Now i want to protect it with Veeam and copy it to VCC cloud repository.
The preferred way is RMAN plugin, but as far as i know, plugin backups cannot be copied to a cloud repository.
So what are my options? App-aware VM backup?
Thank you
Karsten

Hi Karsten,
Yes, application-aware VM backup would be the best option in your case.
Or alternatively, you may continue using RMAN plug-in and deploy SOBR with the local CIFS repository as a Performance Tier extent and object storage in the provider infrastructure as a Capacity Tier extent.
Thanks!

Re: ORACLE backup to VCC
Hi Petr,
thank you for advise.
Actually it is not a CIFS repository but a nas share on a StoreOnce and no plugin is used right now. It is native RMAN, controlled out of the Linux VM.
And the goal is to decommissioning the StoreOnce and leveraging the local ReFS repository.
If the external DBA is fine with that, i prefer the app-aware strategy too.
And restore would be with the Veeam explorer for oracle, right?
Thx
Karsten

Re: ORACLE backup to VCC
option number 3 could be:
Add a SMB share to the repository and target the RMAN backup to it as it was with the StoreOnce.
And then backup it with VAW file based to the cloud repository. Is it any good?

Re: ORACLE backup to VCC
Hi Karsten,
Understood. Application-aware strategy enables a wide range of restore options: everything that is available for VM (entire VM, Instant VM Recovery, file-level restore etc.), AND restores by Veeam Explorer for Oracle (however, you'll need to have a direct connection to the target server) including Instant Database Recovery.
I don't like the option 3 because of the following reasons:
1. Too complicated. Seems to be difficult to manage and the likelihood of failure is relatively high: two different landing zones, two jobs, two different backup tools
2. RTO is higher: you need to restore a backup and then restore a database from the restored backup
Thanks!

Re: ORACLE backup to VCC
Hi Petr,
just a quick update. The DBA and i decided to go for a CIFS share on the repository volume because the DBA said it is easier and more flexible than the RMAN plugin in case of a restore. Im not able to comment on this. Oracle dbs are not my business.
But additionally we do a application-aware backup to get the consistent data to the cloud repository. Im fine with that tbh and my primary goal.
DBA happy, backup engineer happy. great
regards
