Plugin Rman Operation mode
good day all,
with version 12, the RMAN plugin can work in Standalone, basically as it was with 11, or in Managed, as explained here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
I am pretty clear on the two modes, what I was wondering is:
if I am in Managed Mode I schedule protection jobs from the Veeam console:
It is still possible to launch backups 'manually' (or with scripts) via RMAN from the DBa?. And so, if there is this requirement, should one stay in the old Standalone Mode?
Has someone similar experiences to share, or advices and so on?
Thanks

Hello,
Yes, you can still launch backups manually on the source side but you can back up only those databases which are added to a policy and a policy must be enabled. You can find more info with examples for RMAN on this page.
Thanks!

Re: Plugin Rman Operation mode
Hi Petr, so I cannot even launch an "independent" RMAN script on the source side?

Hi Marco,
You can make an ad-hoc backup to a local disk but not to a Veeam repository.
Could you please give me more info about the use case? The idea of the policy is to provide a single point of management on Veeam B&R side and I wouldn't consider running of such "independent" scripts as the main usage scenario.
Thanks!

Re: Plugin Rman Operation mode
Hi Petr,
a possible use case is that, when the plugin is in managed mode, an Oracle DBA has to access VBR console to launch "an extra backup".
Maybe he/she would prefer to be more independent and not use different software in this sporadic case.
I have another question if you can help me: using managed mode, is it still possible to specify a recovery catalog in the application job?

Hi Marco,
Thanks!
Maybe I misunderstood what you mean by "independent" but this case is covered: as mentioned above, a DBA on source side can run a backup to Veeam repository manually using a script but the database must be added to a policy and a policy must be enabled. If "independent" means a backup of a database which is not protected by a policy, only backup to a local disk (not Veeam repo) will be possible.mamosorre84 wrote:an Oracle DBA has to access VBR console to launch "an extra backup".
Nope, but it's a good feature request. We would implement it in one of our future releases but I have no ETA at the moment.mamosorre84 wrote:is it still possible to specify a recovery catalog in the application job?

Re: Plugin Rman Operation mode
Hi Petr, the use case of my original question is this:
- the customer would like to have RMAN backups managed by veeam
- but there is currently in use a script that launchs an RMAN backup when the disk where logs are saved is nearly full
sure I don't like this: Many times I've seen Oracle DBs stopping because the log location was full. And I consider a WORST practice when the production depends on the backup!
In my opinion, when the backup systems stop or crash, the production should never be impacted.

Hello,
I don't understand why your customer could have ACFS/LOGs full when RMAN backup is done everyday without any error? From my POV, it could be a problem if RMAN backup with veeam is not running since many days but that means there is a major outage somewhere.
That's a good news for the recovery catalog! +1 for this feature request.
