Specify Microsoft SQL credentials

Post by Mikael.Wessel »

Hi,

Before you could specify Microsoft SQL credentials in VBR when enabling AAP. I can see that this is possible if backing up PostgreSQL or Oracle, as well as you can specify Microsoft SQL credentials in the Veeam Agent.

Would it be possible to get this feature returned?

Hi Mikael,

What version were you thinking of where you remember having this? I don't recall there was an option for separate Guest Processing credentials specifically for MSSQL, and the v10 User Guide suggests the same. I just don't recall that this was an option for VM backups.

What is the use case may I ask where the normal Guest Processing account isn't suitable? Can you explain the need for the separate account on MSSQL?

Hi David,

I may be confusing it with the Veeam agent, and the fact that you can do this with PostgreSQL and Oracle, so don't take my word for this being correct. It may never have been an feature in VBR.

Where i have seen this being useful is when we need guest processing of a SQL database, but the owner of the database does not want the domain administrator having access to it (only SA users, or other SQL users). Problem is that if i put the SA user as the credentials of the VM, it won't be possible for Veeam to logon to the domain server. If i put the domain administrator as the credentials, VBR won't be able to log on to the SQL server.

This is probably one of the reasons this is implemented in Veeam Agent for Microsoft. I just don't understand why it wouldn't be an option in VBR.

Hi Mikael,

Understood, honestly speaking I had to double-check past documentation as I couldn't remember either.

Discussed internally and agreed we should have same option to specify an MSSQL service account for the VM backup jobs that Agent jobs already have; thanks for the topic/request!

For now, please continue with Veeam Agent for Windows.

Hi David,

Any update regarding specifying Microsoft SQL credentials when performing VM backups from Veeam B&R?

Hi Mikael,

No updates/changes since the last post. :) Will update when there is a change, but please continue to use the Agent for Windows for the time being.
