Veeam Backup of Windows Internal DB fails

Post by GLKR »

Hi!

Since a couple of days we experience an issue that a Windows Agent Backup of a server is constantly failing with this error:
Creating VSS snapshot Error: Failed to create snapshot: Backup job failed.
Cannot create a shadow copy of the volumes containing writer's data.
A VSS critical writer has failed. Writer name: [SqlServerWriter]. Class ID: [{a65faa63-5ea8-4ebc-9dbd-a0c4db26912a}]. Instance ID: [{4d0cad8a-fa3b-4e86-b962-b9033c736254}]. Writer's state: [VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_PREPARE_SNAPSHOT]. Error code: [0x800423f4]. Failed to create snapshot: Backup job failed.
Cannot create a shadow copy of the volumes containing writer's data.
A VSS critical writer has failed. Writer name: [SqlServerWriter]. Class ID: [{a65faa63-5ea8-4ebc-9dbd-a0c4db26912a}]. Instance ID: [{4d0cad8a-fa3b-4e86-b962-b9033c736254}]. Writer's state: [VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_PREPARE_SNAPSHOT]. Error code: [0x800423f4].
In the eventviewer we get:
Source: microsoft ole db provider for sql server
Error message: backupvirtualdeviceset::initialize: cocreateinstance failure on backup device '{5ce09b95-c1e8-46af-9a5b-c562f0392600}2'. operating system error 0x800703fa(illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.).
We already tried this: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/share ... tion-error, but no solution. Already rebooted the SQL VSS Writer service (and the server itself), but also no solution. The Veeam agent has been re-installed, the SQL 2019 has been updates to the latest CU...

Anyone who experienced this issue?

Thanks for your help!

PS: There's also a case running: 07478843

Hi Glenn,

The only thing I can recommend is working with our support team, and probably open a support case with Microsoft as well to troubleshoot the "cocreateinstance failure on backup device" error. You may use this tool to reproduce the issue without using Veeam, and this tool to collect more details about VSS activity on the server, just ask for your support engineer opinion about the feasibility to use these tools in your case.

Thanks!
