Partner Monitoring of Multiple Customers

Veeam Logoby bigiron » Sat May 23, 2015 9:20 pm

Hi,

We need to be able to monitor multiple customers from a single pane.

We have built our customer base first by selling perpetual licenses of Veeam (mostly Essentials Enterprise Plus) and have now progressively begun to sell the cloud licensing of Availability Suite.

Typically we manage our customers environments by way of a one way VPN. We would like to be running a central instance of VEEAM ONE that will see all our customers installations B&R and Veeam Servers.

We need this so we can do housekeeping of each.

How can we make licensing work for us in this situation?

Thanks, Stephan.

Hi Stephan,
Veeam ONE uses one license for all of its components. Veeam ONE is licensed by the total number of CPU sockets on the managed hosts. A managed host is defined as a VMware vSphere ESX host or Microsoft Hyper-V host from which data is collected, or that is otherwise managed by the software.
The license does not put any restrictions on the number of managed vCloud Director servers and the number of managed Veeam Backup & Replication servers.

You can add multiple VBR servers to Veeam One Monitor to track backup infrastructure activity.
Also you can monitor customers` virtual infrastructures. Thanks!

Hi Stephan,

If you have a VPN connection to your clients sites, then single installation of Veeam ONE (in your HQ) should be sufficient and you will need to license it as you usually do (based on the number of monitored host sockets).

Thanks!

We have some time ago purchased for ourselves 3 x Essentials Enterprise Plus 2 Socket licenses. During that time we have also sold these licenses to our customers with the intention of being able to act as WAN backup target and also to be able to monitor them. We are now also selling cloud licensing. Once again Availability Suite as per Essentials Enterprise Plus.

We want to monitor all via our original license. Is this possible? It seems that we cannot do this.

If you have 1 license key with 6 sockets of Essentials Enterprise Plus, then you can only monitor 6 sockets in total from your clients locations. How many hosts (sockets) do your clients have?

We have 6 sockets in our DC environment. Our customers on-premise are also fully licensed. We just want to be able to monitor and manage them(they don't know how and don't want too).

Our customers have multiple sockets (usually 2). / = 1 copy of Essentials Enterprise Plus(Perpetual) / 1 Copy of Availability Suite per VM Monthly(Cloud).

Most customers then have one server with 2 sockets for their production server typically.

Ok, got it! In this case you can't use your license key to remotely manage/monitor your clients infrastructures, cause you will need more than 6 sockets for that. You can try to use our predefined dashboards (widgets) and embed their URLs to any portal (for example, SharePoint site). Each URL (dashboard) will represent one managed client and you will have a visibility across all clients via single screen in your site.

Here is an existing whitepaper that can you give you basic understanding on how to achieve that > http://www.veeam.com/how-to-guide-integ ... int_td.pdf

well that's not good as we are trying to run a infrastructure management business. so what you are saying is that we can sell our customers licenses but we cant manage their infrastructure centrally..?

We want to use the BUSINESS VIEW for that and put each customer into their own container... Then we can do housekeeping via the performance and backup mgmt as provided...

I don't want to write our own portal. Whats the point? We bought (and sold) VEEAM for that?

You can do that, but you need to install Veeam ONE in your infrastructure and use the license key that would have the number of sockets that is equal to the total number of sockets of all your clients. I would also recommend to contact your Veeam sales rep, cause there might be ways of issuing a license key for these purposes, but I'm not aware about these, unfortunately.

OK. I'll contact them but we are already having other similar licensing issues which are equally hopeless. Sounds like the licensing needs an overhaul.

I'm not involved in creating licensing models, but I will definitely share your feedback and the use case with our upper management cloud sales team.
