Adding an Evaluation Key to a production backup server

Hello,

we have a full functional commercial licence of type enterprise plus. our veeam manager sent us a 90-Day Evaluation Key with a number of instances, because we want to do tests with larger NAS-backups.
But how to install this licence? i dont want to touch it right now, but as far es i know a new installed licence will replace any further installed licence, so we possible lose some licenced features.
What should we do in this case? Some kind of merging or the like?

Hi Hans,

Yes, I expect the new license key will replace the current one. If I remember correctly, it’s not possible to merge a paid license with an evaluation license, but I can’t verify it right now. If you want to test yourself, you can easily roll back by reapplying the old license if needed.

Regarding your testing; If you plan to test with Tape (File to Tape or Backup to Tape), consider using a separate backup server. Jobs with a huge amount of files will impact the configuration database size, and if you later stop using File Backups, you might be left with an unnecessarily large database.

May I ask roughly how many files or folders you’re planning to include in your testing?

Hello Fabian,

my tests with fileshare of ~3T comprised 16.000 files and 5200 folders. We plan to test backup with larger volumes in size of 25-30T. I dont know exact numbers, but it will be a multiple of my current tests.
At all we plan to use file to repo and/or file to tape with around 60T payload and our new backupserver should handle this. Currently we use postgres and next will do also.

Building a new backupserver for using evaluation kyes is unlucky. Currently we dont have a potent physical server on standby.

Thanks. 16k files should be fine for the first tests with the current backup server.
Keep in mind the guideline of "850 MB database space for every 1,000,000 file and folder versions" when sizing the new backup server, and ensure CPU and memory are scaled according to the number of backup files. Make sure to review the requirements in our help center.

Hello,

they told just replacing the old licence with the new one. The high number of instances will als be enough to replace the socket-licences for our VCenter-environment.
So not that bad as expected.
