Archiving & Purge

Post by Hirosh »

Hi All,

recently we were asked if Veeam has the capability of purging data. personally i know that technically that is not supported in Veeam, but im asking just by any chance there have been any new added feature:

the request is that we are storing data on a share folder and then backed them up by veeam to an Apollo server. we would like to know is it possible after 1 year of data storage & backing up by veeam, veeam automatically delete the oldest data (1 year old) on source share storage, without touching the backed up data on apollo server, just to free space on source share folder?

regards,
hirosh

Hi Hirosh,

At this time no, Veeam does not perform purging of the source data as part of operations to protect the data from the shares. Veeam will only manage its own backup data via retention and user initiated removals of no longer necessary backups.

Is the main goal to ensure that there is a backup prior to the purging of older production data?
Or the main goal is to ensure the source of the data is having regular "clean up" tasks to ensure there is suitable free space?

Hi David,

for this specific service , the main goals are both making sure there is a backup prior to purging of older Production & parallely cleanup tasks to ensure there is Suitable free space.

Understood, thank you for confirming. As noted, right now no such feature, but you can confirm that there is a backup of the current data in the share based on the reporting from the backup itself. The HTML report for the job (daily notifications) will inform if there were challenges with accessing some of the data, and please ensure the Severity Options (Step 6) are enabled. Any issues with backing up data with an Unstructured Data Backup job will produce such warnings in the UI, and in the log directory, there will be a .csv file with the missed data and reason(s) that the job failed to access the data -- you can act on these and ensure that all the data is protected prior to purging.
