Guys, we're not just building an enhanced File Copy - we're building a whole new platform for the unstructured data backup. We're building something that can scale to billions of objects and PBs of data - and we need sufficient time to do it right, so that it comes with the quality that you'd expect from Veeam.

Having said that, it has progressed well in the past year and in fact, we're getting ready to launch the internal technical preview. We just cannot provide any ETA right now except When It's Ready™

Our NAS backup functionality will NOT use NDMP, even just because we want it to work with any shared folder at all - and not just those sitting on an enterprise-grade NAS that implements NDMP protocol. But also because NDMP is not really scalable at high-end due to its periodic active full requirement. Having said that, we ARE planning to have a [completely separate] functionality that will allow you to perform NDMP dumps directly to tape - some customers are really wanting to do those as the "last resort" type of NAS backups.

Are there any hints as to how it will be licensed? Per socket, per host/VM/SVM, per share, per-TB (ugh)?

I ask because we liked the per socket licensing. It was easy to understand and allowed us to do things like put the app on one VM and the db instance on another and allocate resources appropriately (thanks to dedupe on the array, disk space was a minor issue), apply different retention policies to them, etc, etc..... And then the new Availability Orchestrator came along, with per-vm only licensing. Suddenly it made a lot of financial sense to do just the opposite and consolidate the app and db onto the same vm.

We are in the process of a domain migration, so knowing how the CIFS share system is licensed will have a big impact on how we architect the SVM's on the NetApp cluster. If it is per HA pair, then great, we will break things into multiple SVM's to spread the load. If is per SVM then we go with one big SVM and play games with the LIF's. If it is per TB then we will look elsewhere unless it is dirt cheap as it starts to really suck when the cost to backup the storage is 100x more than the storage itself. (*chough*Comvault*chough*).

I don't really see any fair way to license NAS backup other than per-TB, so it would be safe to bet on this one.

U3a has already been released. As for the NAS backup functionality, it is currently at the technology preview stage now. Here's the quote from the latest forum digest e-mail regarding that:

And the second tech preview build is for our upcoming NAS backup functionality. Again, we've been through a few iterations with this feature as well – and while we're not ready yet to ship this one in the immediate update, we're at the point when we're not shy to let other people start playing with the technology. And this is actually the reason why I am announcing these technology preview builds here – while currently, these builds are for internal use only - if all goes well, we're intended to turn them into the private betas that select customers will be able to obtain from their regional Veeam sales team (as per our usual beta process). So if you're interested, I recommend contacting your Veeam sales rep and signing up right away, as the space is usually very limited by the capacity of sales engineers team in the corresponding region - and I assume they do it on the "first come, first served" basis.

We have a NAS share \\Share01, which we mapped to a folder on C drive of Hyper V VM. We used the command mklink "c:etwork-share" "\share01\share$". But with the VM level backup the contents of the mapped folder is empty. We are looking for a way to take backup of this NAS share along with VM level backup (we don't have license for VM agent for Windows)

NAS backup capabilities will be available in future, currently you can only use File Copy jobs for that. Please see above for details.

We maped the CIFS with Windows server 2016, but it's not showing up with Veeam. So do we get the exact steps that you followed

You need to add this Windows 2016 server to Veeam B&R and then select it from the list in the File Copy job wizard.

We already added the server to VBR. It's showing up server disks contents in C drive. But it's not showing up the shared drive in VBR. So how you shared the NAS with Windows servers, we used MAP network drive option.

As I've mentioned above, file shares can be backed up using File Copy jobs, not VM backup jobs. If you need assistance with setting up the job, feel free to contact technical support.

Sorry Foggy for mistype. We tried with File Copy Jobs and the folder which we mapped is empty while view from Veeam File Copy job, From server the contents are viewable
