Backup from fileserver share to other share a USB disk

Till Veeam V10 i was able to use a File Copy job to backup from \\server\share to \\server\share. This is a file base backup to a USB disk.
Important for disaster recovery. Documents, Install instruction and encrypted Password dbase are copied to this USB drive.

Now i have upgraded to Veeam version 11 and suddenly this is not possible anymore. Why is this removed?
This worked fine for several years!

Support says:
The only solution is to add these files servers as managed servers and install Veeam stuff on them!
Then you are able to backup files/folders from these managed servers....to a repository... i made my USB disk a repository

Main question for me is there a other way, so i can have a file backup from share to a share?
Or can Veeam re-add this functionality?

Hello,

Could you please clarify what kind of blockers have you faced when you tried to apply the solution provided by our support engineer? Basically, I wouldn't expect any issues related to the installation of additional components on the file server. Also, I'd recommend to consider NAS Backup as a method to backup a massive amount of files.

You seem to skip the question why Veeam removed this feature... it worked perfectly fine untill i upgraded to Veeam V11 !

What i do not like is that i need to make a busy fileserver a kinda Veeam proxy. It needs extra software en open ports in the firewall.
While in Veeam V10 i could use just the (hidden) share /DFS path with domain credentials.

just to make it clear: you are mentioning File Copy Job here, but case ID referred above has comments about NAS File Backup Job troubleshooting.
Which one you are using?

Hello,

I use File Copy job and use the added File Shares => SMB shares.
I can use the already added physical proxy and choose the correct drive letter where the USB stick is mounted/attached.
Backup was succesfull

Other workaround i tried:
Right click on these SMB shares and add them to a backup job. Pointed to use the USB (made it a repository) -> that backup job failed
ERROR ==> 8-4-2021 17:05:13 :: Error: Job metadata files for the existing backups are missing from the backup repository

Hello Peter,

File copy jobs do not require any metadata, it feels like you are talking about nas backup jobs. If that's correct nas backup currently do not support backup to rotated drives (i.e. to the repository with USB drive added), we plan to add this functionality in later versions. Cheers!

That is what makes me confused with question.
File Copy Job has never accepted SMB paths as a source, nor added with v10 File Shares.
It is File Backup Job that works with added file shares, and it works completely different than File Copy Job.

Running checks on \share$ part changes. Stay tuned.

I can see Support Case was just closed after a remote session with engineer.
Guess reworked backup infrastructure did solve the case.

It used to work in Veeam V10 to adding in a file copy job some shares \\server\share$ and send the files to a server in the list of managed servers (My proxy).

But the workaround works.. made the fileservers managed servers ... it is not my preferred way, but OK.
