GFS Storage (1Pb+) - Calculation and what to use!

Post by mb78 »

Hi

We've got B&R and backing up 260 VMs - in total we estimate this to be around ~50Tb of single 'Full' Backups. We currently store 90 daily backups and Synthetic backups on a Saturday on a Synology with 430Tb Storage.

We need to start using Backup Copy jobs as GFS in another building and want to do at least 12 monthly and 10 weekly backups for each VM.

My basic maths skills work this out to be (12 x 50Tb) and (10x 50Tb) = ~1100Tb.

What would people's suggestions where this lot goes? We've seen a Synology HD6500 that can house up to 60 disks, plus expansion... Or there's Cloud... Both are very expensive... Thoughts on where best?

Thanks
M

Matt,

Have you tried using one of the Veeam Calculators?

Both of them can be used to help with the sizing that you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

i would recommend a VHR or a object storage for GFS space savings.
the calculator is indeed a perfect way to estimate the required space.
always calculate with the used size per workload and dont forget the daily incs.

Matt,

I wrote a blog when vbr v12.1 was launched which showed how to setup GFS backups to be stored on an on-prem Archive Tier. The steps are the same when using a public cloud as well.

Hope you find it a useful reference.
