Managed server File share vs SMB file share

I have a projet to backup a 50Tb Windows Server 2008 (no R2) File server to backup.
What s the most efficient way to backup this server ?

In the lucky case where the server is a 2008 R1 64 bits and so I can add it as a Managed Server

If i add the source as "Managed server" is the backup works at Block level ? (so is faster..)

if it's a VM, then VM-based backup. If physical, then 2008 without R2 would be via the SMB protocol.

If you ask for NAS backup, then it will always be file-level backup. 50TB is fine. The first run might take long, but incremental runs should be okay (depending on the hardware)

To have block-based backup, the Veeam Agent for Windows would be needed. But this requires 2008R2 SP1

Can be processed with VSS (locked files are not the problem), but at a cost of one datamover. It's not possible to use multiple proxies for managed servers.

VSS is possible only with SMB3 file proxies, so locked files will be skipped from processing whenever VSS is not configured. Multiple proxies can be assigned (so backup runs faster).
