NetApp NFS shares backup from specific snapshots

Post by antonk »

Hi guys,

I need to have some suggestion from your side here. The situation is the following:

• Linux servers (RedHat5) with NFS mounts from NetApp.
• Oracle Application 11i running on them (yes, it's a very old environment that cannot be upgraded).
• Third-party (Oracle Applications) script, which is addressing NetApp and creating there it's snapshots with all the requirements for application and database do be sent to hot backup mode, etc and etc.

I need to find a way to tell Veeam to backup those specifically created snapshots. Not to create snapshots of its own, not to backup actual state of the file system, but to backup those specific snapshots. They are also refreshed daily and even, some if them, a few times a day, and a customer wants to have all them backed up externally.

I have an option to setup some mount server, create snapclones of those snapshots, mount them on this server and backup them up from this server side, but I really try to figure if there is a Serverless solution that can fit and work.

You are more then welcome to advise how to resolve this issue and thanks in advance.

Check for the "Backup from a storage snapshot at the following path" feature.
It allows you to define an alternative path for backup and then restore to original.
With pre-scripts you can create the snapshot or mount it as needed as you described. It works as well without the script if you somewhere have done this already.

Yes, you are definitely right. I've figured out that I don't need to use Filer backup, but rather shares backup, since I do see snapshot directory, from which I can do a direct backup.

Yes, but I would use the alternative path as described in my post above, it has the advantage that restore goes automatically into the original share, not in the (likely) read only snapshot and fail.
