SMB share to tape

Post by r.horowski »

Hi,
I am looking into backup SMB shares to S3 compatible storage and then copying it to tape.
From what I understand by reading this topic it was not possible at the time.

Has anything changed regarding this case in the last years?
Is it currently possible to copy backup from S3 to Tape?

Hi Robert

I believe your question is not related to this topic.
This topic is about „VB365 object storage based repositories“ to tape. Which I think you don‘t use in your environment.

May I ask, are you asking about VB365 repositories on SMB shares? Please be aware, we will start deprecating them slowly starting in our upcoming release V8. Please consider a migration to a fully supported repository solution. Object storage is the recommended storage for VB365 backup data.

VB365 backups on local disks or SMB repositories can be written to tape. With the help of VBR or Agent backup jobs.
For VB365 SMB repositories, make sure that you disable all VB365 services before running the file backup job.

Hi @Mildur
You are absolutely right! I didn't catch that we are on VB365 section!
Sorry for that.
My question is absolutely about VBR and production SMB shares backups to S3 and then to tape.

Hi Robert

Thanks for clarifying. I moved your topic to the file share subforum.

You have two options to backup a production SMB share with your production files on it:
- File To Tape Job: Directly write your SMB share to a Tape
- File Backup Job + Backup to Tape Job: Create a backup of your SMB share to a Veeam backup repository and use a Backup To Tape job to write that backup to a Tape.
