Target via iSCSI QNAP slow write

Post by grzegorz »

Hi. I have two servers in a cluster connected with a matrix. Everything is running under VMware control. I have installed Windows Server 2022 on the local disks of the servers, and within it, I have Veeam B&R installed (including proxy).

Backups will be stored on a NAS connected to the same switch as both servers. The Veeam virtual machine is connected to a QNAP TS-873AU-RP (QTS) NAS via iSCSI. On the QNAP, I have created a RAID6 and a LUN with a 512B sector. After connecting it to the Veeam machine, I formatted it as NTFS with a 64KB block size.

This NAS will be the target for Veeam backups.

As a test, I copied a large file - approximately 7GB - to this NAS via iSCSI. The write speed averaged around 20-30MB/s, while the read speed was 300 MB/s.

I'm not sure why it's writing so slowly. What should I improve?

When did you create the array? Maybe the RAID build is still running.
Why did you format the volume with NTFS. ReFS 64k is the way to go for Windows.
How did you connect the QNAP? MPIO?
Copy files via Windows Explorer is not a good measurement. Please use diskspd.

Week ago.

Due to many doubts from this thread. vmware-vsphere-f24/veeam-backup-reposit ... 82739.html
On old servers I had similar configuration with NTFS.
How did you connect the QNAP? MPIO?
QNAP with port trunk 802.3ad dynamic 1+2 Adapter >> CISCO Port-Channel >> ESXi with NIC Teaming (CDP), (Route based on originating port ID), dedicated vlan.
VM and NAS are in the same vlan.

What is the network speed you use?
I would first try to connect the NAS only via a single port just to see if the port channel might be an issue here. In addition I would not just copy a file but rather use e.g. fio to perform the testings as you will be able to use parameters e.g for concurrent writes and you will see if it goes up or there is a limitation.

Currently NAS is connected to 2x1Gb/s ports in CISCO switch.
Maybe next week I will use 10Gb cards in my NAS.

My NAS has 2.5Gb ports. When I connected it directly to a laptop with a 2.5Gb Ethernet card, the speed was a consistent 100% at 2.5Gb/s.

I would first try the network connection here. Upgrading to 10G for sure is the preferred way. But even right now you can try to remove the trunk and just connect a single 1g link just to see if it’s better. My guess right now is that the configured trunk doesn’t work as you expect.
Keep us posted.

The trunk is my guess, too. Better use multipath or a single connection if you dont know what you are doing.
