Windows 2019 DC Folder redirection and veeam file share backups and restore
Hi.
On my network I've a DC Windows Server 2019 and a GPO that redirect all domain users documents (in MyDocuments folder) to a network share NFS.
In the GPO settings option "Grant the user exclusive rights to Documents" is enabled.
The issue is that when I try to restore any file from the veeam's file share backup I see all folders empty.
On the other side the option "Grant the user exclusive rights to Documents" has ever works fine in my networks.
Is there any way to mantain option and have working backups?
Any idea?
thanks in advance.

Hi M4Biz
The option "Grant the user exclusive rights to" guarantees you, that none other account as the user itself can access those files on the share. So I would expect that our File Share Backup Job also won't see the files on the share when the backup job runs. Without permission to read files, we won't be able to protect them.
Best,
Fabian

Hi Fabian.
Thanks for your reply.
I suspected something like that.
I'd like to know if there is any workaround to solve the issue.

Can you tell me more about the storage appliance in use?
Or is it a Linux Server? You said it's an NFS Share.
Best,
Fabian

Hi Fabian.
A GPO redirect all users documents to an SMB share hosted on a NAS powerd by TrueNAS software

Hello
So it's an SMB share, not an NFS Share? You talked about NFS at the beginning of this topic.
If you backup a SMB or NFS Share, the account you configure in Veeam must must have read access to the files. If you use "Grant the user exclusive rights to", only the owner and local system account will have access.
If your SMB share would be on a supported Linux machine or windows file server, you could try to backup the share with mode "managed file server" or with Veeam Agent. Veeam Agent wouldn't care about specific user SMB/NTFS access permission when running it's backup job. But for SMB/NFS Shares, you must make sure that the account has read permissions for all files/folders to be able to backup it.
Best,
Fabian
