Hi gutitrade,

Curious do you use v11 and a File Share \ SMB share job from the NAS to a disk repository then a file to tape from the SMB repository ?
Assuming you also have NAS license for your data.

FlatWhite,

Please keep in mind that its not recommeded to use file to tape job for backup files produced by nas backup jobs (nas backup runs in forever forward incremental backup mode, so file to tape will process every changed backup file during every job run).

Hi Dima,
thanks for the advice, what would be the recommended approach to backup NAS files and then offload them to tape ?

FlatWhite,

You can backup SMB/NFS file shares directly to tape via file to tape jobs with the following considerations: for the huge amount of source files/folders (1 million or above) we strongly recommend using dedicated SQL Server Standard edition for a Veeam B&R database; ideally database should be stored on the SSD.

Dima,
Do we need Enterprise Plus edition to access the volumes, currently on Enterprise edition. In addition would we need a NAS license also.

Hi FlatWhite,

NAS backup is licensed on a per-workload basis so you have to have a VUL license in order to be to protect file shares. VUL license implies Enterprise Plus feature set. One license protects 500GB of data. For enterprise-scale environments using VUL licenses, we provide other larger capacity bundles allowing you to protect multiple terabytes of data at lower costs.

Regarding licensing options and license merge/upgrade, please contact our sales representatives and partners directly. I'm sure they have a lot of interesting options to provide you with.

Thanks

FlatWhite,

To make sure we are on the same page: currently File to Tape jobs do not require any license and are completely free. You can use any edition to tape out your share: add share to the Inventory node of Veeam B&R, register your tape infrastructure via Tape node and create file to tape jobs via Home node.
