NAS backup and primary and secondary target

Post by rpop »

Hello,

We are testing Veeam nas backup, we plan to migrate our actual backup solution to Veeam for the next 2-3 months.

we will have 4 different production backup jobs, each one with different retention parameter:

job1 : 3 months of retention
job2 : 6 months of retention
job3 : 12 months of retention
job4 : 20years (always data added, never changed or deleted)

Our storage target are 2 Storeonce, one on each site (site1 = production , site2 = test/dev/DR)

The primary target for these 4 jobs is on 4 differents catalyst repositories
My 1st question:
Can we use only one primary repo for these 4 jobs, even their retention are different between them ? ( 1 catalyst store is better than 4 in term of dedup)

For each of these 4 jobs, we want to use secondary backup (storeonce on site2), same question: for secondary backup, because different retention can we use only 1 catalyst store or is it better to use 1 dedicated repo (catalyst store) for each of our 4 jobs ?

Thank you
Best regards

Hello!

Normally:
1. Yes, you can use the single primary repo for multiple jobs, each with its own retention policy.
2. Same.

However, please do keep in mind StoreOnce has a soft limitation (imposed by HPE) of approx. 10TB of NAS backups per storage device. Creating multiple Catalyst stores does not help, as the limitation is at the device level: max number of physical files the single StoreOnce device can handle is fairly low. In fact, it is so low that even the fact our NAS backup engine consolidates many small files into the single 64MB blob file does not help the situation much.

Having said that, we're adding an option in v11 to use larger blobs (1GB) for StoreOnce backup repositories as a workaround. This will bump the limit 20 times.

Thanks!
