Veeam NAS Backup cache repository

Post by rpop »

Hello,

At NAS backup level, in particular during the transformation data step (can take between 1h and 6h, it's variable), is there big advantage to create cache repository on our full flash array ? actually our cache repositories are presents on a DAS 10k rattached to the Veeam Proxy server, this is a powerfull blade server, .

Veeam NAS Job:
Source NetApp (+snapshots) ----(10Gbps)----> Blade Veeam proxy (cache repo inside) --------(FC)----> Target Storeonce Catalyst

Thank you for your reply

Best regards

Hello,
no. Cache repo data is loaded into RAM anyway, so SSD does not really give you an advantage. If you look at the .vcache file you will see that it is only a few MByte.
in particular during the transformation data step
you mean when retention is applied? how large is your Netapp source / the amount of backup data? I'm asking because there is a 10 TB limit for StoreOnce systems.

Best regards,
Hannes

Hello Hannes,

Thanks for your reply.

Our NetApp is a VM of 11TB with 12 different volumes, one of our Veeam job backup concern 7 volumes (7 shares, 1 by volume),

Total size for these shares represents ~2.6 TB for ~6 millions files, one of these share is very variable in term of volumetrie: full = 800Gb and + or- 400Gb every weeks, it's this share where the "Transforming backup data" step time is variable 1 hour to 4 hour, depend the day

On the target storeonce (5100), we dedicated a catalyst store for this Veeam job, actually the size on disk is ~2.2TB, and the size "user data stored" is 6.2 TB.

rpop,

Thanks for the details! Transform operation is performed on the repository (can call it a post backup operation since source device is not involved), so cache repo does nothing at this point it time.
