Backup of the proxmox host and containers.

Post by Mario Rossi »

Hi, I have correctly implemented the backup of the VMs on a physical repository and copy to S3.
Let's see how it behaves in the next few days.

However, I ask how to extend the backup to containers and to the entire proxmox host.
If a proxmox update goes wrong, or I have problems with the disks, or other problems, I would like to be able to restore the entire proxmox host operating system from veeam.
Just like I do with a Windows PC and boot from recovery.

Thanks.

Hi,

Ok, your requests have been noted. Although I doubt we will support PVE host backup, but container support can be discussed.

thanks for your input!

[MERGED] Feature request - Proxmox LXC

Post by ksl28 » 1 person likes this post

As the subject states - we would like to see LXC containers supported for VBR for PVE.

We will rely heavily on these in the future, and have previously used the Proxmox backup server (PBS) to handle these.
As of right now we are using VBR for the normal VMs, and then PBS for the LXC containers - it would be great, to have this in one place.

Proxmox is based on debian, we could be satisfied with an official setup/management guide for debian linux systems.

Those found online, unofficial, are often obsolete and not working or introduce instability in the host.

Several users have had instability since the transition from kernel 6.5 to 6.8 (proxmox 8.1 -> 8.2) and other problems.
Being able to quickly return to a stable situation is convenient.

Not to mention that, sometimes, changes are made to the configuration files to block the name of the network interfaces, pci pass-through, etc.

Hi,

What do you mean by "official setup/management guide"? Just a generic guide on how to back up PVE server, or you need a guide on how to back up PVE servers using Veeam?

Thanks!

The second.
My wish is to have a small PC dedicated to Veeam server and with that backup the Proxmox host, the vm it contains and the Windows clients I have at home.

To make my wish come true I only need the backup of the Proxmox host (and container).

Hi,

Yes, the installation steps for VAL are still valid. However, the remaining part about using VAL for PVE backup has never been officially tested.

Thanks!

Hi all I just setup my veeam backup server for use with my pros mod environment.
Is there also an option for backing up containers?

Hello Ajegon

Welcome to the forum.
Proxmox container are not supported. I moved your question to the related container request topic.

@Ajegon, what kind of applications do you use containers for? E.g. are they stateless, or you use them to run databases?

Thanks!

@PTide, One of my containers is a mysql database server, besides that i run a couple of application servers inside other lxc containers, which are mostly running on docker containers inside of the lxc containers.

We would also be very pleased to have support for LXC containers, as we are planning to use stateful containers in the future to strengthen security in the network and avoid overheads.
LXC container technology offers many advantages here that we would not have with classic VMs (GPU support without passthrough).
As long as Veeam B&R does not support LXC containers, we will have to make do with VMs.

Is it possible to submit feature requests in the Veeam portal? If so, as a paying customer I would do so immediately.

Best regards
