Initial Backup speed up

Post by agrob »

Good Day

We are in the Onboarding to VDC. Today i got this message in the VDC Portal:
"The feature that allowed adding an extra app registration to speed up the first SharePoint backup has been retired and is no longer available."

At the moment, we have two Backup Policies
1. Exchange
2. Sharepoint and Teams

Initial Exchange Backup went well and is finished.

The initial SharePoint Online / Teams backup is still in progress.
Since the second application is no longer supported (and has already been removed from Entra ID), I would like to clarify whether any best practices exist to improve the current SPO backup performance.
Would it be beneficial to create multiple jobs and run them in parallel, or is this not recommended because all jobs would operate through the same registered application, potentially causing throttling by Microsoft?
If this does not provide any actual performance gain, I will continue with a single SPO/Teams job in the long term, which should not pose any issues once the initial full backup is completed.
Any best practices or tipps?

Thanks

Good morning 🙂

That is correct there’s additional details that will likely come in due course but effectively every backup vendor must adhere to one app registration per service. OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams are using the same Graph API endpoint (I’m referencing to Teams storing its data on SharePoint for clarity here) so that is why this is the case.

I’d recommend leaving your policy as is, as if you create additional full backup policies they’ll slow each other down by sharing the same backend API quotas.

Hope this helps!

Hi Michael

Thank you for your response. In this case, all we can do is wait for the initial backup to complete. Hopefully, Microsoft will provide a way in the future to better identify legitimate backup processes so they are not throttled as heavily.

Best Regards

just for information: do not remove the second app from Entra ID if you have already configured it. I did it and this lead to errors in SPO Backup. Even if i did a reauthentication in the settings tab after removing the second app. It seems that somewhere in the configuration it is still used... Luckily i had the app in the veeam entra id backup and was able to restore it :D

Hi,

Yes that is correct, please raise a support ticket and we can delete it from the backend 🙂
