Failed to update the Microsoft Azure backup appliance

Post by dali@iae.nl »

Case #07409608

Upgraded to VBR 12.2.0.334
Did assign missing permissions on the Azure backup appliance.

When trying to upgrade form GUI gives the error:
<VMNAME>: Failed to upgrade host components. Error: 'Failed to update the backup appliance /subscriptions/12345-678a-9c123-xxxx/resourcegroups/<rg name>/providers/microsoft.compute/virtualmachines/<VMNAME>.'

How to start investigate where it goes wrong?

Hi Da Li,

Regrettably we will not be able to troubleshoot over the forums, and the message itself requires additional investigation from Veeam Support. I can see that logs just got uploaded to the case, so please allow the Engineer time to review the logs and determine why the components could not upgrade.

If possible, please include which permissions were missing/added on your case so the Support Engineer has all the information on changes done to the permissions; I cannot tell if it's relevant for this particular error, but it's best to ensure the Engineer has a full understanding of what was changed as they're reviewing the logs.

Similar issue here case 07420108 logged. I am being told that version 12.2 isn’t compatible with Veeam Backup for Azure v7 which sounds crazy if true to me. I get an error saying it can’t create a snapshot of the azure appliance when updating and then a message similar to the op.

I'm busy with Support but I can confirm I did also first get an error that that snapshot could not be made while we see the snapshots been created on Azure.
form Support I got:

It looks like your compute account doesn't have enough permissions to do all the required operations. The full list of permissions can be found here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbazu ... tml?ver=70
Please ensure that your compute account has all of them.

So I will again double check all settings. If all fail I am thinking of just recreating a new Azure backup appliance to get further for now.

I have created a new azure compute account from VBR and assigned to the Azure Appliance but it still has the same issue updating. For now i am stuck on version 6 of Veeam Backup For Azure.

Was able to get this resolved by downloading a newer version of the Azure Plugin For Veeam. Updating to 12.7.0.222 allowed the snapshot to be taken. Link was sent as a fix by veeam support.

Did a remote session with Veeam Support. We got a longer list of rights to be added in Azure then the original link was.
And we also had to update the plugin from 12.7.0.222 to 12.7.1.18 (https://www.veeam.com/download_add_pack ... ureplugin/).
Now finally it all worked out. Thanks.

We have updated the Service Account permissions according to User Guide:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbazu ... tml?ver=70

Please also install the latest Microsoft Azure Plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication (12.7.1.18) from this page:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbazu ... tml?ver=70

then perform the upgrade of the VBAz appliance from the VBR console.
