Updating/Upgrading Veeam Backup for Azure When Managed by VBR
I just wanted to get updated guidance on patching Veeam Backup For Azure appliances when managed by VBR. As far as i know, it is not supported to run the WebUI Veeam Updater service and update in that manner and the only way is to update when there is a patch/upgrade installed in VBR and using the update option from within VBR. Is this accurate still?
We have had some concerns expressed over the fact that there is often important security updates showing as available in the WebUI that may not get patched for several weeks or months due to having to wait for VBR to have a new patch/update released. Maybe i am missing something though?

Re: Updating/Upgrading Veeam Backup for Azure When Managed by VBR
Security updates for Ubuntu may not necessarily affect VBAZ/VBR functionality as long as VBR <-> VBAZ versions remain compatible, and the WebUI updater is recommending the security update.
To be safe, updating in VBR is the best way to go about this, version compatibility details can be found here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbazu ... patibility

Thanks Johan. It would be great if in a future update it was possible to have a better workflow around this when they are managed. Maybe some better integration with VBR to apply patches that will not break compatibility or some method for scheduled updates for compatible patches.

Yes, I'm told there are some plans to improve this in a future version, for now the VBR plugin currently only cares about VBAZ service updates.

Re: Updating/Upgrading Veeam Backup for Azure When Managed by VBR
I have installed a vbaz and have it managed by a vbr server. I noticed when logging on to the webgui there were quite some updates for the appliance. In the VBR server I did not see any option in updating just the appliance. In the end I used the update feature from the webinterface and updated the appliance that way. I noticed some Ubuntu security updates, so again I have updated the appliance from the webinterface.
It probably will be a different story if you have to upgrade the appliance to a newer version, but to keep it updated within the appliance version I see no other option than to use the update manager from within the appliance webgui.

I've also used the Web UI to install patches and things. I guess I didn't see in any of the documentation where it said NOT to do that. I haven't had a problem, yet (famous last words).

Ok, quick question. I see Version 7 has been released.
What is the right way in updating, do I first update the plugin on the VBR server and then update the appliance, or is the preferred method the other way around?

Hi Oscar,
The plugin should always come first, as only the latest version of the plugin supports the latest version of the backup appliance. Here is a UG link for more info.
Thanks!

Re: Updating/Upgrading Veeam Backup for Azure When Managed by VBR
A plus-one from me: it's frustrating that the appliance can't be updated exclusively from VBR.
It doesn't make sense to me that some updates can only be performed by VBR - yet others, arguably just as important from a security perspective, don't show up in VBR at all.
I caused issues some time back trying to update the appliance directly from the web UI which broke my connection with VBR - so I know it's not a supported method. However there continue to be some major security updates (e.g. to Ubuntu) that don't ever show up in VBR.
Please consolidate ALL updates/patches for the Veeam Azure appliance into the VBR console
Thanks

Hi All,
I'm trying to update to v7 and VA appliance says update only from VBR server licensed.
I go from VBR installed in same network resource but when start update receive error from VBR: Failed to create snapshot of virtual machine "name_VA_VM":
Does this error mean anything to you ?
Thanks !

Hi Marco,
This doesn't ring a bell for me. Can you please open a support case for this and let us know the case ID so we can look into it?

@ITCrewNS thank you for the feedback on this topic. For now, major upgrades need to be performed via VBR but we will for sure enhance the way all updates/patches are handled via VBR to the appliances.

Hello,
in VBR (12.1.156) the upgrade button is nor available. Any idea why?
The appliance itself has received all OS updates.
Only missing major Update to V7:
- Veeam major updates
- Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure (7.0.0.467)

Re: Updating/Upgrading Veeam Backup for Azure When Managed by VBR
You need to update your backup server to V12.1.2.172 and then install the newest Azure plugin (12.7.0.218).
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbazu ... tml?ver=70
You can find a compatibility matrix between backup server, plugin and appliance in our help center:

I experienced the same. I've opened a case with support and awaiting response. Will update whenever I get feedback.marco.luvisi wrote: ↑Jul 09, 2024 10:42 am Hi All,

Re: Updating/Upgrading Veeam Backup for Azure When Managed by VBR
Hi team,
with versions VBR 12.2.0.334 and plugin 12.7.0.128, is it possible upgrade the VBA appliance from VBR? I don't have the option and can't see the VBR 12.2.0.334 version in the matrix:

Thanks,
Regards.

Re: Updating/Upgrading Veeam Backup for Azure When Managed by VBR
Hello Scrat
Yes, VBR v12.2.0.334 and plugin v12.7.0.128 are compatible with each other, as VBR v12.2 is shipped with plugin v12.7.0.128. It appears we have simply forgotten to update the table in the help center. I will request our documentation team to update it.
May I ask about the build version of your Azure appliance?
The latest build is v7.0.0.467. There is no need to update if your appliance is already on v7.0.0.467.

Re: Updating/Upgrading Veeam Backup for Azure When Managed by VBR
Hi Mildur,
sorry, layer 8. I When I upgraded VBR, VBA was also upgraded (I didn't see), and that's why I thought was strange that I didn't see the "upgrade" option in the VBR console.
Thanks,
Regards.

Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad to hear that the update worked successfully.
I assume you have selected the "Update remote components automatically" option when updating to v12.2.
Best,
Fabian
