Application Aware Backup of Exchange 2010

Post by wardak »

We have three Exchange Servers each with a copy of the DAGs. When the servers were originally installed all the disks within the Hyper-V VM are dynamic and not basic. My understanding is we are unable to create an application aware backup with dynamic disks.

I have tried converting the disks on one of the servers with a third party tool from dynamic to basic. The conversion works fine, the problem is when I do this I am unable to replicate the DAGS because the block size has changed.

I was wondering if there might be a solution to the problem of creating an application aware backup of an Exchange server with dynamic disks.

Thanks

To the best of my knowledge dynamic disks (inside the Guest OS) do not support VSS snapshots, so you cannot utilize application-aware image processing for this VMs. If it is not possible to convert these disks to basic, then you might want to create backups via internal tools (application-specific) and then run a VM backup job.
