Backing up 2012 R2 from Veeam 2012 Server

Post by conradblack »

Hello,

I had a quick question that I can't seem to find an answer to on my own. In the past, we've had issues having Veeam managing a Server 2012 R2 Hypervisor from a Server 2012 Veeam server. Since then, we've kept all our hypervisors at Server 2012.

Now, we are looking to install a Server 2012 R2 guest VM on a 2012 Hypervisor, and have Veeam backup this guest. Are there any issues pertaining to this? Will we be able to perform the backup of this 2012 R2 guest successfully? Most likely there will be some application-aware processing. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Generally, there should not be any issues with this setup. All operating systems supported by Hyper-V can be successfully backed up, regardless of the OS where Veeam B&R itself is running. Make sure all relevant Windows Server hot fixes are installed on the hosts.

Just a quick question - aren't you going to use deduplication feature inside this Windows Server 2012 R2 VM?

Thanks for the answer :)

And no deduplication will be used within that 2012 R2 VM.

Then, as Foggy's said, there would be no issues. Otherwise (should Deduplication role be installed), you would need to update a backup server to Windows 2012 R2 in order to avoid issues related to files granular recovery. Thanks.
