Backup Hyper-V machines and LUNS on HP MSA P2000 iSCSI
Hello everybody,
I'm new to Veeam. Right now I'm testing with Veeam 7 trial (got 28 days left so hope somebody can help me out here).
Recently we have a Hyper-V Failover Cluster environment buildup with a HP MSA P2000 iSCSI and two Hyper-V server (All MS Server 2012).
Now the backup of the VMs are very good. For just backing up the VMs I just love veeam.
Now the question: How to backup the SAN (LUNS, passthoughdisks)? And is it even possible?
I already tried to make an iscsi connection to the veeam backup server. So the LUN (Volumes) are visible in the computer management (offline).
I also saw some video's on the web with the menu option "SAN infrastructure" on the left. I don't see that option in my Veeam management console.
So I tried proxy. But It seems only to see the volumes that are online (Shared storage in Cluster management). and not the ones that are offline (Passthrough disks for the vm's).
Hope somebody have the answer. Thanks !!
Regards Stephan

Hello Stephan,
Pass-through virtual disks and disks connected via in-guest iSCSI initiator are not supported, and are skipped from processing automatically. As to the SAN infrastructure tab, then it is available for VMware environments only and is used when you want to leverage SAN snapshots (for HP) in your backup and recovery procedures.
Thank you!

Hello Vitaliy S,
Thanks for the reply!
To bad that veeam is not support the pass through disks
Veeam rocks! no doubt about that. But if veeam would support pass through disk it would double rock!
Thanks!
Regards Stephan.

What is the point of using passthrough disks these days? You lose all benefits of storage virtualization...
There is only one valid use case left may be, and it is addressed by shared VHDX feature of Server 2012 R2.

Hello Gostev,
I think youre right. Thinking about change it to VHDX.
Are CSV disks supported?
We have a file server role (no vm os) but "physical" in the 2012 failover enviroment.
If not then we have to change the strategy of the file server to.
Thanks!

You mean storing shared VHDX on a CSV volume?
Don't see why this won't be supported.

We hit this problem, I ended up creating a VHD on the host and adding this to the guest machine, Veeam pickup all the vhd drives connected. We now have successful backups.
