Best OS for Veeam Availability Suite?

Post by gazfocus »

I’m new to Veeam and looking for some advice. We have bought a new (to us) HP server that will be set up running Hyper-V on bare metal and two VM’s running Windows Server 2019 Std. Our old server (a Dell) will be running Veeam Availability Suite and will contain the repository for our backups.

What I’m wondering is, whether I can stick Windows 10 on the Dell server and run Veeam from that, or does it need to be a Server OS? I’m really looking for the best practice solution and not necessarily the cheapest option as want to do everything correct.

Hi Gareth,
please find the requirements in our helpcenter: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... kup_server
So, even that Windows 10 would work and is supported from our side, I personally would recommend a Windows Server OS. Basically because a lot of features like Cortana or the Microsoft Store are not present and it´s more focused on reliabiliy and security. Another point is, that ReFS is mainly build for the server OS version and can be a bit fiddeling to be used in the workstation OS.

Last but not least, always think about the features you want to use. Stuff like our Storage Integration might be complicated to be setup in the workstation, for example because of a driver lag for fibre channel devices.
