Best practices for system backup to a backup repository

Post by isential »

I'm very new in veeam and I can't find a solution for my problem.

My environment is a Microsoft Server 2016 with Veeam B&R 9.5 and a tape library installed. The Server is also the Hyper-V host. I'm backing up several VMs with a backup job to the default backup repository. A second backup job will backup this repository to the tape library. I think, that is OK so.

Now I like to backup the system of the physical Microsoft Server 2016 to the default backup repository, too. All the VMs and the backup repository are all installed on a separate data drive d: and shouldn't be included in this backup job.

I can't find a way to do so. The file copy job wouldn't be the correct way to have the possibility to do a disaster recovery, is it so?

Thank you very much for any help.

For physical machines backup Veeam has Agent for Microsoft Windows. There are both paid and free versions available.
If you want to backup VBR configuration you don`t need another tool, just set configuration backup job.
Thanks!

I like to backup the entire Host-Server with his OS. So I will use the Agent.
Thank you very much!

Right, in this case Veeam agent is the best choice.
Thanks!

Hi, I am also very new to Veeam and have exactely your scenario.
One Hyper-V Host W2K16 + 2 W2K16 VMs on this host.

My first job is a backup copy job of the two VMs to the default Repository on the host and I am receiving the following Message for both VMs!

No restore points found
Initial copy did not complete, and will resume on the next copy interval
Processing finished with warnings at 26.09.2017 22:00:33

No other info about why!
Do you have an Idea how to resolve this?

Thank you
Mike

Hi Mile and welcome to the community!
Besides backup copy job, do you have backup job?
Backup copy makes another copy of existing backup, while backup job, actually creates one.

Thank you Shestakov.
Now the Exchange VM is backed up and with DC/File VM I am receiving Error code: 0x8004103a Cannot query class instance from enumerator object. [WMI] Failed get next object in collection. Failed to convert snapshot to referencePoint snapshot path ...
I have still to investigate!
Good that by the way I am runing daily Windows backup of host and VMs on an external disk.

Have you contacted Veeam support? If yes, what is your support case number? If no, please do.
Thanks!

Hey. Now everything is OK. As next I want to integrate the Host itself to the backup. I read here that I have to install the agent for physical computers. Do I have to buy the agent extra or it is in Veeam B&R 9.5?
Thank you!

Glad the issue is fixed. Could you provide details how it was resolved?
As for the host backup. If you want to backup VBR Server configuration, you don`t need another tool. If you want to backup the whole host, you need Veeam Agent for Windows, that`s another product, which requires license, however there is a free version of Agent that may be sufficient for your needs.
Thanks!

It was just an overlaping of Windows and Veeam Backup. Now backups are complettely different times, no overlaping and the error is gone.
Thank you for your help.
