Best Practice Network Scheme

Post by mb1811 »

Hi Forum!

I got a question regarding to our new planned network scheme:

Code: Select all

LAN - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- LAN
| |
| 10G | 10G
| Tagged Uplink for | Tagged Uplink for
| Hyper-V Guests | Hyper-V Guests
| |
Hyper-V 2019 #1 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - -Hyper-V 2019 #2
| 10G Link 10.0.0.0/30 for |
| Hyper-V Replica |
| 10G | 10G
| 10.0.1.0/30 | 10.0.2.0/30
| Veeam | Veeam
| |
- - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - Veeam Server - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
						|
						|
						|
 				NAS for long term backup
We want to use 10.0.1.0/30 and 10.0.2.0/30 for highspeed backups without polling that traffic to our LAN.

We also want to use Veeam Replica between Hyper-V #1 and #2.
But wich way would the Replica traffic choose?
10.0.0.0/30 or via the Veeam Server?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Matt,

Selection of networks happens automatically based on availability. Additionally, you can instruct Veeam B&R server what to select by configuring the Preferred Network list settings.

Thanks!

Thanks Vitaly!

If I got this right, I tell my Veeam Server this three preferred networks:

10.0.0.0/30
10.0.1.0/30
10.0.2.0/30

Veeam will choose 10.0.0.0/30 for replica as this is the link with less hops.
10.0.1.0/30 and 10.0.2.0/30 will be chosen for regular backups.

Veeam server will always be trying to select the preferred network regardless of the job type. Here is a similar topic for more info. If your backup repository is a NAS device, then you can configure a getaway server to run Veeam data movers and route the traffic over the correct network. Hope this helps!

Hi Forum!

After some issues with Windows 2019 we went back to 2012R2 to keep this company running..

Now I'm goingt to config our replicas. As mentioned I want Veeam to use 10.0.0.0/30 for replica traffic.

When configuring that job I just can select source: 10.0.1.1/30 and destination: 10.0.2.1/30
I also set the preferred networks as mentioned above.

When running that job this error occurs: Failed to process replication task Error: Failed to connect to the port [10.0.2.1:2500]

But Veeam should connect to 10.0.0.2/30 - seems to me that Veeam cant see that interlink between those two hyper-v servers?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hello,
correct. The on-host proxy does not know about the second IP (direct route).

There seems to be no router involved. That's why there is no connection for replica.

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanks Hannes,

I figured out to create extra off-hosts maschines on those 2 hyper-v server additionally.

Seems to work!
