Hello,
I wanted to ask if I can activate the Windows data deplucation feature on the hard disk on the Veeam repository.
I would save about 50%.
But I wanted to ask if this has any disadvantages
VM recovery is no problem, the data deplucation role is installed on the Veeam server (all roles on one server)
But what about a bare metal restore?
Is the data deplication role integrated into the recovery ISO?
Or how does that work?
Or would it not work at all in this case?
regards,
Blackshie

Re: Data Deduplication Veeam Repository
Hello, the disadvantage is slow restores and additional risks of data loss/corruption due to heavy data processing. On Windows, we recommend using a ReFS repository instead, which also provides significant space savings thanks to block cloning and without any of the above-mentioned issues.
Recovery environment connects to an existing backup repository and reads data from it normally, so it does not need to know anything about deduplication itself. It is on backup repository server to "understand" deduplication.
Thank you

Re: Data Deduplication Veeam Repository
I already use ReFS, and the function is really fantastic, especially when using synthetic backups, with the fast clone function you save much more space than with an active full backup
And of course the additional feature increases the risk of data loss.
And what about a bare-metal restore, especially to other PCs?
Is the deduplication feature integrated into the ISO?
Or do I have no change to make a recovery in this case?
Despite the approx. 50% saving, I am not currently inclined to activate the feature either

Re: Data Deduplication Veeam Repository
While we're on the subject, does anyone know what data compression algorithm Veeam uses?
I remember reading in a very old paper that is used for optimal LZO,
But they have recently changed their algorithm
