Different schedules, same vms

Post by sjuanlu »

Hi!
I have a Hyper-V cluster with 10 vms. I want to have three backups differents:

- A weekly backup with retention policy 4.
- A monthly backup with retention policy 4.
- A quaterly backup with retention policy 4.

So that at the end of the year has 12 different restore points.

Can I do this only with the first full backup as a seed in backup copy job? or It's necessary three different backup jobs each with its schedule...

Thanks in advanced.

If you have a regular backup job, you can configure linked backup copy job that will perform the required GFS (weekly/monthly/yearly) retention (so you need a single backup job and a subsequent single backup copy job to meet your requirements).

Sorry, I do not understand you.
Regular backup is a job daily backup? With 4 restore points?

At the end of the year I want to have 4 monthly backups, 4 quaterly backups and the last 4 weekly backups. If I linked a backup copy job with 12 restore points and schedule (1 w backup, 1 m backup and 1 q backup) at the end of the year I will have the two last monthly backup, 10 weekly backup and no quaterly backup.

Regular backup is your daily backup with whatever number of restore points you have there. In the linked backup copy job you have the ability to explicitly select the number of weekly, quarterly and yearly backups.

OK, I understand now. But the only drawback I see is that GFS backups are full, not incremental.

Why do you consider this a drawback? Because of space required to keep them? From the other side, each of the GFS restore points is a standalone restore point that doesn't depend on any other files in the chain, which is good for archiving. Also, taking into account the fact that secondary storage is typically a dedupe one, they do not actually take that much space.

Yes because the space required but I had not thought about deduplication. Thank you so much for the support. :D
