Failover Cluster not backing up host nodes only guests

Post by ruddj »

Good Day,
I've followed the usual guides on adding our Hyper-V Failover Cluster to B&R 12 (https://www.veeam.com/kb2463 and https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120 ) and it is backing up all our Hyper-V Guests fine, however there seems to be no guidance on backing up the hosts that make up the cluster. So the Hyper-V Infrastructure itself is not getting backed up.

Similarly we have a File Server Failover Cluster using Agent based Failover Cluster backup that reports I am backing up the entire cluster, but looking at the restore options I can only restore data off cluster shared disks, not the C: drive. So if a system or config file gets corrupted I have no way to restore it (e.g. a bad windows update).

I've searched the forums and supports site and can't see any suggestions. Closest is a podcast referring to Server 2008 R2 and suggesting to use Windows Backup for the host (https://www.veeam.com/podcast/episode-8 ... ck-up.html )

Are there any recommendations on how we are supposed to backup the servers that make up our Failover Cluster?

Thanks.

Hello,
KB2463 is for application servers / file server clusters. Not for Hyper-V clusters. So I recommend stopping that approach for the Hyper-V cluster.

For the Hyper-V hosts: if you really want to back them up, then you can do that by using the standalone host approach. There are many discussions on that in the Veeam Agent for Windows forum.
but looking at the restore options I can only restore data off cluster shared disks, not the C: drive
then I guess, that you did only select volume backup. Not "entire machine". If my guess is wrong, please post the support case number.

Best regards,
Hannes
