gateway server needed - I assume

Post by hbilke »

Ave collegae,

2day I had to deal with the following setup (called to do some restore testing):

2 non cluster Hyper-V hosts, local storage
VBR 11 "manager" as vm
Repo on SMB (synology) - (jikes)

To utilize SureBackup: an instance of a separate gateway server would be needed or won't it work at all?
(Performance is not an issue for them)

You don't need another gateway server with this setup.
You can configure one of your hyperv server as the gateway server for the SMB Storage.
If your SMB Storage is in the same location as the hyperv servers, it will give you the best performance.

You can choose the gateway server in this step:

Grüezi ind Schwyz,

SMB and Hyper-Vs are in the same LAN-Segment/VLAN. What is more crucial: CPU, RAM or local disk storage?

Grüäzi auch :)

I would say, for surebackup, you need to have a good network connection (speed and stability) between the nas and the gateway/mount server.
For booting up vms in a surebackup environment, you need mostly the RAM on your hypervisor. How much, depends on how many vms are tested at the same time. You can configure how many RAM will be used for each vm in the surebackup job.
For example, If you have a vm with 100GB RAM, then you can configure 20% to only use 20GB in the surebackup job.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... 10#startup

And you need to have free disk space for storing the changes inside the vms when they boot up.

CPU depends on what you are running on the vms. If there is an application on autostart, which runs always on 100% in the productive vm, then this application will also use 100% in the surebackup job.

No, it is not. I have found it somewhere 10-15 years ago. But cannot say where :)
