Get rid of old short retention

Post by dali@iae.nl »

We had a Job which holds 7 days, 4 weeks, 12 months.
Now we have new Jobs and old Jobs hold some retention of last days we do not need. Want to clean up that space.

The retention of the old Jobs are for example:
41 days ago : Incremental
42 days ago : Incremental
43 days ago : Incremental
44 days ago : Full

52 days ago : Full (M)
80 days ago : Full (M)
108 days ago : Full (MY)

From Retention perspective the old Jobs has nice cleared the old 4 week automatically since the new Jobs already hold the last 4 weeks.
Now we will only hold the Full (M) / (MY) and get rid of the old daily's 41-42-43-44 days ago. But you cannot set 0 days / 0 Restore Points in the old Job.
How to get rid of it (otherwise then doing by hand selecting on the Repository storage)?

Hello Da Li

Are the backup files still linked to the old jobs? Then we will keep at least 3 backups files (in your case 4 because the full backup is required for restore):
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
[For backups linked to jobs] If the retention is set in days, Veeam Backup & Replication leaves at least 3 backup files in a backup chain regardless of the set retention.
Workarounds:
- Delete the old backup job
- Detach the backup chain from the old job
- Manually delete those 4 restore points from your repository

I recommend deleting the old job. This makes the chain orphaned and our background retention job will be able to delete the daily backups according to the retention settings at the time they were created.
[For orphaned backups] If the retention is set in days, Veeam Backup & Replication can remove all outdated backup files in a backup chain.
Please note, our background retention job will only delete those backups when the retention type is "days".

Best,
Fabian

Hi Fabian,
Did not know this exact working but it works great. Job was indeed set as last Daily restore points.
Deleted the Job(s), then "Apply retention now" on the Backups and voila! all the vib's are gone. Exactly what I wanted. Many thanks.
