Guest files restored as ASCII 0 chars

Post by tobia »

Hello, I'm posting this topic to understand if this is a know problem.
I had to restore some guest files from a Win 2012 vhd backup. when I restore the file this seems to be corrupted, it is made just of ASCII NUL (0x00) char with the same lenght of original file.
I tried many different restore point but I get always this problem. I also tried to restore other files, someone works other doesn't.
Now I'm trying to restore the whole vhd and access mouting it, but I'm waiting the vhs restore (seems to take some hours).

Any idea to solve this troble?

I have a little new.
I tried to restore the vhd file and mount it.
I can see all files, but when I try to copy them I get this error:
"Error 0x80070780 The file cannot be accessed by the system".

I saw that I can copy some file, I cannot for other files and what is different between two cases is these filesystem attributes:
WORKING

Code: Select all

Get-Item * | select Attributes |fl
Attributes : Archive
NOT WORKING

Code: Select all

Get-Item * | select Attributes |fl
Attributes : Archive, SparseFile, ReparsePoint

Another little new.
I could access all files but mounting the restored VHD in the original machine. Mounting in another machine causes file access failure.

However it is still interesting to understand why this behaviour.

Do you have any windows disk features, like BitLocker or Storage Spaces enabled in that guest?
Or maybe some other encryption or deduplication software in it?

I have the windows 2012 decuplication feauture installed on that server, however I'm not sure that disk decuplication was enabled. I will check, however, is veeam incompatibile with windows decuplication?

To support file restore from such disks, Veeam should be installed on windows 2012 machine with deduplication enabled.
Also if you want to mount virtual disk to another VM, it also should have this feature enabled.

I confirm there is windows decuplication active in this volume.

I read the topic, so It is just necessary to install decuplication feature also in backup server? Thanks

Yep, if your Veeam Backup and Replication server is installed on Windows 2012 machine, all you need to do is to enable deduplication role on it.

Thanks.
