Hyper V guest machine auto sutdown

Post by moakh »

Dear Experts,

We are using Veeam availability suites 9.5 Updates 4. What we observe, during backup job is running or after completing the job, automatically some of machine went shutdown.
I am facing this issue frequently. We have both VMware & Hyper-V environment and am facing this issue in on my Hyper-V guest servers.
Kindly advise me.
Many thanks in advance.

Best Regards;

Ejaz

Hi Ejaz,
When Hyper-V Quiescence is enabled in Backup Job Settings, Veeam asks Hyper-V to prepare VMs for Application-Consistent backup. Hyper-V VMs have 2 operating backup modes: Online(application-consistent, but only for Windows) and Offline(application-consistent for other OS, however Hyper-V will suspend VM to freeze IO). So I guess you are facing expected behavior - Job settings tell Hyper-V to make application-consistent backup, and only way to achieve it is to suspend VM. Note that Veeam can override Hyper-V default behavior - please mark checkbox [X] Take crash-consistent backup instead of suspending VM, and see if machines go down again.
/Cheers!

As advise by expert, I have changed the option "Enable Hyper-V guest quiescence". But still issue is re-occuring. My hyper v guest machine again randomly shut it down.
Kindly help me.

Hi Ejaz,
as far as I can see with case progress, Veeam support has requested a partner-side webex session with Microsoft support engineer, as we are positive this VM shutdown is not caused by Veeam. Based on job settings and logs, Veeam does not interact with guest OS(we have crash-consistent backup enabled) and it is a crash-consistent VSS snapshot that is being taken at Hyper-V level. You can easily reproduce that issue by taking a manual VSS Snapshot outside Veeam application to make sure.
Please, align MS Support case Engineer with ours and bear a session together. I am sure root cause of the problem will be found by working together.
/Thanks!
