hyper-v migrtion and fixed drives

Post by frankive »

I have two separated questions today.. :)

1. Customer have 2 node hyper-v with 2008 R2 Failover Cluster.
We want to migrate to our new 2012 CLuster. I guess Veeam replicaation would be a great solution here as long as I will not repliacte back to 2008 R2?

2. The customer is using fixed vhd files but want to switch to dynamic drives. Will the replication create new dynamic drives?

Correct.
The customer is using fixed vhd files but want to switch to dynamic drives. Will the replication create new dynamic drives?
Can you elaborate on it? Is it possible to switch virtual disk type during replication?

Thanks.

the original vhd files on the 2008 r2 cluster is fixed vhd drives, but cerate with too much empty space and using almost the whole SAN.
The customer want the new cluster to have dynamic vhdx files.

Can Veeam assist in this, either during the replication (perhaps migration always creates dynamic vhdx files..?) or perhaps Veeam creates dynamic vhdx from restore from a backup?

Frank, this is not possible with Veeam B&R replication.

Though possible with disks restore from Veeam Endpoint Backup backups, if I'm not mistaken.

You can replicate VMs to 2012 cluster first and convert vhd to vhdx after that using either Hyper-V manager or PowerShell. Thanks.
