Hyper-v restore with relocate

Post by hadus »

Hi, looking for some restore enlightenment.

When restoring entire VM, through enterprise manager:
We select restore to new location and change path for configuration and vhdx files.

However, when the restore is performed only the vhdx files are located in our specified path (c$\ClusterStorage\Volume03\).
Configuration files end up in the standard "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V".

There doesn't seem to be errors in the restore, it just seems to not care about the location of configuration files:

[03.07.2024 09:50:12.545] <01> Info (3) Custom VHD paths:
[03.07.2024 09:50:12.545] <01> Info (3) -'Server1.vhdx'. Target: 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume03\server1u'. Source: 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume03\server1'.
....
[03.07.2024 09:50:12.621] <01> Info (3) Restoring configuration file.
[03.07.2024 09:50:12.625] <01> Info (3) [AP] (fde84845) command: 'Invoke: FileSystem.DirectoryCreate { (EString) Path = C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines; (EBoolean) Option.Remote = false; }'

Any ideas?

Hi Martin,

Just for clarification purposes, you mean on this step when performing restore to another location, you specifically pick a different path for the configuration file and the path set is not respected?

If so, sounds like a technical issue so a Support Case is required to check the behavior. I'm not aware of any specific nuances with the configuration files and CSVs, so I think let's allow Veeam Support to check the behavior and comment. Please include logs and note the name of a VM that was affected by this behavior so Support knows what to review.

When exporting logs, choose the 3rd radio button Export all logs for selected components and select the Veeam Server, that should be enough to start the investigation.

I do, yes. I'll create a case for it.

Thank you! Please share the case number here when created, and let's see what Support says. Perhaps there's an explanation I just am not aware of, but seems not correct at first blush.
