Hyper-V vm disks always restored as dynamically with Restore to a new location

Post by Stabz »

Hello,
When restoring a Hyper-V virtual machine with fixed disks (VHD), Veeam Backup&Replication always restores the disks as dynamically expanding disks.

I'm using the option "Restore to a new location", there is no option to force the disk format.

I check in the documentation nothing is mentionned.

For me the disk type should be preserved. Is there a way to force it or it's normal with Hyper-V ?

Additionally, the restoration is initialized from a backup residing on a DataDomain.
When I perform the restoration from Azure, I don't encounter this phenomenon.

Hi Stabz,

The disk type should be preserved indeed -- I tested quick on 12.3.1 with a fixed VHD Gen 1 VM, and it restored the fixed disk as fixed.

Please open a Support Case and allow Support to review the behavior. Be sure to include logs for Support to review. (Use the 3rd radio button to export from a specific server, and export logs from the VBR server -- mention the name of the VM you observed the undesired behavior with)

Please share your case number once created. Thanks!

Hey David,

Thank you for your feedback and testing.
I tried restoring from Azure and the disks are preserved.

We opened a ticket (#07681451) and the response is that this is normal behavior with DataDomain, and it will be the same with StoreOnce.

I found an old recommendation to modify a registry key, but I'm not sure if it's still available.

Thanks for sharing the case number, it is really unusual that it happens just with those backups stored on DataDomain if that's the case, I'm not immediately aware of any behavior like this, but let's see what Support finds.

Can you share which key you found?

Can you please implement 1 registry key on the Veeam server:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
StoreOnceDisableSequentialRestore
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1

After that please reboot the Veeam server or at least restart all Veeam services and retry restore operation.
