HyperV Guets VM backup with file indexing
I am experimenting with Veeam and the feature that allows you to back up and also index guest files.
I select two options in the backup wizard:
Allow application aware image processing
enable guest file system indexing
However, when the virtual machines are on, the backup fails, when they are off it completes successfully.
Just wondering if that is normal behavior or if I am missing something?

Re: HyperV Guets VM backup with file indexing
Hi David,
When VMs are powered off, application-aware image processing as well as indexing is not performed, so what you see (failures with powered on VMs) is not normal. What kind of errors do you have for the backup jobs? Have you had a chance to contact our technical team for assistance?
Thanks!

OK, I didnt know if there was some additional steps I may have to take to make it work with the VMs powered on.Vitaliy S. wrote:Hi David,

The errors are as follows:
1/9/2014 4:07:35 PM :: Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and integration components version)
1/9/2014 4:07:35 PM :: Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and integration components version)
Its happening for two VMs, both running server 2012 standard.
I did google it, and found that there was an issue relating to this, but it was fixed in the latest patch, which I just downloaded and installed.
but its still happening.
Should I open a ticket?

If the reg key mentioned in this topic doesn't help, then, yes, please open a support ticket with our technical team for further troubleshooting steps.

Hi, David, do you have any messages reported in Application Event Log? Thanks.

Re: HyperV Guets VM backup with file indexing
sorry for the delay, I will try this today and report back.
Veeam support have also asked me to upgrade the integration components on the VM - but I am not sure how to do this.
And now I am wondering if I should actually have integration components installed on the VM? I didnt know about that.

Yes, backup with application-aware image processing enabled requires that your guest OS has Hyper-V Integration Services installed. This is what allows host to communicate with the guest and properly quiesce applications inside the VM. Here's how you can install/upgrade them.

Re: HyperV Guets VM backup with file indexing
ok, i was just going to post that I did not see any errors in event log.
BUT, just saw your last post about integration services.
I just followed the procedure and it said they were installed, BUT it prompted me to upgrade to a newer version.
So I am just doing that now and rebooting.
