Hi, the best practice is to install Veeam on a dedicated physical machine and outside of your production domain. You want to ensure the backup server is not dependent in any way on the infrastructure it protects to be available when you need to perform a restore, as it is rarely the case in case of disasters. More importantly, it keeps the backup server isolated and thus safe if your production environment is compromised by a ransomware or a hacker.

Most customers also make this server a backup target (using its internal disks or direct attached storage). This provides the best performance and unparalleled reliability comparing to using an external NAS for example.

Thanks!
