Instant restore to hyperV (vmware v2v) reduces vCPUs logical processor count by Half

Post by pooran98 »

We are using Veeam to migrate from VMware to Hyper-V. After the IR has completed SCVMM reports the correct CPU count when you do a properties on the VM. If you login to the VM and launch task manager and check the logical processor count it only shows half of the processors allocated.

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v FeatureSettingsOverride /t REG_DWORD /d [desired value] /f

The FeatureSettingsOverride needs to be 72 to resolve the issue.

Anyone else seen this problem post migration to Hyper-V?

Hi Pooran, welcome to the forums.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the migration and glad to hear it worked save this small mystery.

Were there any messages in the Instant Recovery session about adjusting the logical cores or resources for the machine?

Editing the logical core count is not a behavior I'm aware of -- I know that in some instances, such as when the number of cores set is higher than the target host can offer, Veeam will adjust the cores on the VM, but as far as I remember this would just require adjustment on the VM itself in HyperV Manager, not with registry values.

Please open a Support Case and allow Support time to review the logs for one of the instant recovered VMs that was affected. Be sure to export logs for Support to review. (Use the 3rd radio button to export logs from hosts, select the Veeam server itself to export from). Please note the name of a few of the instant recovered machines that were affected so Support has a starting point for the investigation.

Please share the case number once created, thanks!

Hi David,

Thanks for your response. There were no messages in the instant recovery session about adjusting the logical cores or any of it's resources. The issue happens if we migrate a 2 core VM or a 16 core VM. Once you login to the VM the device manager does report the correct amount of cores but task manager does not until the registry fix is applied.
