Issue I can't Resolve on Server 2012
Hi Guys,
Hyper-V 2012
Veeam 6.5 fully patched
I have a server 2012 setup to be DC
I have ran into this issue
Unable to create snapshot (Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0) (mode: Veeam application-aware processing). Details: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_POST_SNAPSHOT'. The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error may not reoccur. --tr:Failed to verify writers state. --tr:Failed to create VSS snapshot. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.
Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: Unable to allocate resources for taskId: 'e42ed343-a1cd-41e3-92af-1640951282bc'
I have went through various different things to resolve this issue
i have applied VSS hot fix from MS
checked the providers
Reset the VSS writers (none of them are in error mode)
not sure what else to do was hoping if any of you have seen this before

I’m wondering whether the retries were successful or not. Thanks.

Re: Issue I can't Resolve on Server 2012
If this is only backing up VMs on this server, you may want to go into the settings on ONE VM, and turn off the Backup (Volume Snapshot) feature in the Integration services for that VM. You can get there by
Hyper-V Manager -> Right Click on a VM -> Settings -> scroll to integration services at the bottom -> Uncheck the Backup.
This will make it take a little longer on backup as it will save the state of the VM and then snapshot it. then when it is done with that snapshot 1-5 seconds, the VM is backup and live.
See if that works.

Re: Issue I can't Resolve on Server 2012
Sorry for a very late response on this
Support team gave me not too much to work with except for blaming MS for VSS issues etc etc
I have applied a hot fix not really resolved the issue
Robert your suggestion has fixed the issue for me thank you so much it has been a good over a month since the backups for that VM are successful every night

[MERGED] Veeam v7 backup Hyper-v VMs fail
I am using Veeam Backup & Replication to offhost backup Hyper-V VMs.
1、The use of two hosts of the Windows Server 2012,
Veeam is installed on a host computer, virtual machine installed on another computer。
2、Adding a Hyper-V Offhost Backup Proxy
3、Creating Backup Jobs,At the Guest Processing step of the wizard, select the “Enable application-aware image processing” check box。
It fails when trying to backup Hyper-V VM.
This is the error:
Error:Unable to create snapshot VSS Hardware Provider on Hyper-V Offhost Backup Proxy (mode: Veeam application-aware
processing). Details: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_POST_SNAPSHOT'. The writer
experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur. --tr:Failed to
verify writers state. --tr:Failed to create VSS snapshot. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.
*But if you don't select the “Enable application-aware image processing”,and Hyper-V VM system is Windows Server 2012,the backup job completed successfully.
*if you select the “Enable application-aware image processing” ,and Hyper-V VM system is Windows Server 2008 ,the backup job completed successfully.
1、Is it right? Windows Server 2012 does not support offhost backup, with select the “Enable application-aware image processing”.
2、What can you suggest?
Thanks!

Re: Issue I can't Resolve on Server 2012
Thanks for providing the case ID.
Windows 2012 does support offhost backup with application-aware image processing enabled. Is this VM a domain controller by any chance?
You can perform a backup using VM saved state, as provided above, while support is investigating your logs.

This VM is not a domain controller , Hyper-v VM is in Windows server 2012 host.
when I backup for Hyper-v VM, VM system is Windows server 2012, backup job is fail;
backup for Hyper-v VM, VM system is Windows server 2008, the backup job completed successfully;
Other settings are the same.

Re: Issue I can't Resolve on Server 2012
I'm glad you've resolved it (at least temporarily), however, patch 1 was not supposed to fix anything related to this issue. So I cannot guarantee that the job will not fail again some day later. I recommend you to provide the requested information to our support engineers to investigate the actual reason of the failure. Thanks!

I am having the exact same issue in my lab environment, but in my case the VM is a Domain Controller.
Any update from support on this?

Re: Issue I can't Resolve on Server 2012
Peter, as far as I can tell from the case ID provided above, the issue was due to the lack of space on the datastore. Another case was closed due to no response from the customer. So I recommend you to check space and open your own case, providing logs for investigation. Thanks.

Re: Issue I can't Resolve on Server 2012
I understand this is an old thread, but if someone reads this, it may help. I had been digging into this issue for a few hours now and here's what I have found:
This is strictly referring the original scenario with Server 2012 host
Referencing Veeam article: http://www.veeam.com/kb1855
Veeam requires Hyper-V Integration Services version 6.2.9200.20873 for guests 2008 and above. Even with all Windows updates installed, the highest I am getting is 6.3.9600.16384
I found this Microsoft hotfix that updates the Integration Services version on the host: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2878635
After installing the hotfix on the host, try updating Integration Services again on the guest VM. With a few reboots in between of course, try the backup again.
Hope this helps someone out there!
