Offhost Backup with Hyper-V and iSCSI NetApp Storage not working
Hello,
I am looking for a new backup solution for my company. So I am currently testing Veeam Community Edition, v12.0.
If I try to backup a VM with off-host backup option, I get following error message :
"Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: There is no hardware provider for off-host backup detected. Snapshot failover is disabled."
There's no problem when I try on-host backup, it works perfectly.
Some information about my infrastructure :
- 4x Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V Hosts in a Hyper-V Failover Cluster
- 1x Windows Server 2019 Veeam B&R Server (virtual machine in the Hyper-V Cluster)
- 1x Windows Server 2019 Veeam Offhost Proxy (physical machine not in the Hyper-V Cluster, but in same VLAN)
- 1x Netapp FAS2720 with iSCSI Storage for the Cluster Shared Volume of my Hyper-V Cluster
I tried to meet all requirements for offhost backup :
- I installed Hyper-V Role on my Veeam Offhost Proxy
- I installed VSS Hardware Provider (Data ONTAP VSS Hardware Provider) on my Veeam Offhost Proxy and my 4 Hyper-V hosts. Data ONTAP VSS Hardware Provider was installed when I installed Snapdrive 7.1.5.7427.
- I mapped the Cluster Shared Volume to the Veeam Offhost Proxy. I see the volume in disk management and it is marked as offline
I looked for, and found, similar issues in the forum, but I didn't find any suitable solution.
I also opened a case with the number 06105207.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Best regards.
Daniel

Re: Offhost Backup with Hyper-V and iSCSI NetApp Storage not working
Hi Daniel
Welcome to the forum.
I replaced the case number (00730422) in your post. I couldn't find it and I believe the correct one is 06105207.
I don't see anything wrong with your configuration, but without access to the environment it's not possible todo any troubleshooting. And technical troubleshooting is done by our customer support team.
What you can check with vssadmin if the provider is installed on the Off host proxies:
If you want to test our software, I recommend to get a trial license. A trial license allows you to test all features and provides you with access to support cases while running the trial period. The community edition only provides support on best effort.
After you have made sure with vssadmin, that the provider is installed, I recommend to get a Trial license and create a new support case for the trial license.
Best,
Fabian

Hi Fabian,
Thanks for the reply !
Exactly, the right case number is 06105207 ! Sorry for the mistake.
I checked the list of the vssadmin providers on the backup proxy.
Here's the output :
I don't know if Data ONTAP VSS Hardware Provider need specific configuration. I am investigating.
Best regards,
Daniel

Re: Offhost Backup with Hyper-V and iSCSI NetApp Storage not working
I think I solved this problem.
I should have checked all NetApp requirements before installing SnapDrive on the 4 cluster hosts and on the off-host backup proxy.
Thanks to the "SnapDrive 7.1 for Windows Quick Start Guide", I did the following :
on the storage system :
- create a management LIF (logical interface) on the SVM (storage virtual machine) where is located the cluster shared volume
- unlock the vsadmin account of this SVM
on the 4 cluster hosts and on the off-host backup proxy, in snapdrive transport protocol settings :
- add a storage system using management LIF IP address and vsadmin account unlocked previously
But now I have a new issue.
The backup still fails with the following error message :
07/06/2023 16:03:50 :: Failed to import snapshot on offhost proxy ************** Details: Failed to import snapshot: Import snapshot task has failed. Vss error: '0x80042320'
07/06/2023 16:05:20 :: Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: Import snapshot task has failed. Vss error: '0x80042320'

Re: Offhost Backup with Hyper-V and iSCSI NetApp Storage not working
Well, I should have really checked all NetApp requirements before installing SnapDrive...
The storage aggregate where cluster shared volume is located has to be assigned to the SVM.
All the necessary information was in the quick start guide for Snapdrive.
The off-host backup job is now working successfully.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Best,
Daniel
