Renaming servers causing issues in Veeam

Post by jarrod.morrison »

So a normal practice we have used when replacing physical server is rename a host with old one the end of the computername and rename other servers as well to keep our names for other services in use. So for example we have hyperv servers named CorpVrtServer and CorpVrtServer2, we just renamed CorpVrtServer to CorpVrtOld, Then renamed CorpVrtServer2 to CorpVrtServer and commissioned a new CorpVrtServer2. My issue is that now in veeam its not showing the correct vms and shows both servers with the same VMS. I have tried removing and reinstalling the agent and rescanning but still have the same issue. If i rescan, both servers seem to show the vms of the server scanned so if i scan CorpVrtServer then both it and CorpVrtServer2 show the same vms on both from CorpVrtServer, if i rescan CorpVrtServer2 then CorpVrtServer an it show the same vms which is obviously incorrect. I am guessing there is a cache somewhere or files i need to remove to stop this happening.

We do this procedure as a number of other backend services tie to the names and veeam is the only problem service, all other services we use have been running fine and we have been in this practice for many years. Any ideas ?

Hi Jarod,

I believe that you should have removed an old server from Backup Infrastructure and after that add the new one according to these instructions. Now, there is a duplicate and perhaps some discrepancies exist in Veeam configuration database so the best action plan is to ask our support engineers to help you to resolve the issue. Please provide us with a support case ID.

Thanks!

Ill have to open a support case then, Im surprised it has lead to this issue as I couldn't be the only person out there that has used this practice to preserve phsyical hardware names. Given we need to do this for another 30 nodes across 15 remote sites I will need to get a solution before we attempt to decomission the old hardware to bring our new hardware online

We never reuse machine hostnames in our environments.
It‘s better to get a fresh start without any connections to an old machine. There is always somewhere a reference to the old server.

Hello,

I agree with Fabian but still I'm pretty sure that everything will work correctly if you delete an old host and add a new one afterwards because there are no duplicates. Anyway, let's wait for what support can find out.

Thanks!
