Replication between Hyper-V 2012R2 and 2019

Post by Anders »

I need to migrate a Hyper-V 2012R2 cluster to a new hardware platform. Currently, the Hyper-V 2012R2 is in the same domain as all the users, and use the same vLAN as all the servers. to tighten the security, we want the management of the Hyper-V moved to a new management domain and new vLAN.
At the same time, we want the hypervisor upgraded to 2019 (we are talking august or later this will happen - hopefully 2019 will be a stable platform then...)

As far as I can figure out, Live migration wont be possible in that setup. So I'm thinking about using quick migration or replication.

Is it possible to do Replication of the VM's between the two different versions of Hyper-V?

I've worked with Veeam B&R since the early versions... but never together with Hyper-V!

Hi Anders,

Yes, see here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... l?ver=95u4

When the source is 2012 R2, you can replicate to 2012 R2 or higher through the snapshot replica technology. The target OS has to be higher than the source OS.
One note I would make, once you do that, and you would permanently failover, you still will need to have a maintenance window. The hardware version of your VM will not be the latest so you will need to modify those afterwards and manually
