Repository Access for VBR Server Only

Post by BMcDuff »

Hi,

My VBR server is a Hyper-V VM and the storage repository is a NAS iSCSI target drive on the VBR server and no other machine is allowed to connect to the target. I would prefer to keep it this way for security reasons.

Backups seem to be running fine, but I am worried that the Hyper-V hosts that I am backing up not having access to the repository will potentially cause issues or inefficiencies. Everything is on a local network.

Could a setup like this cause some gotchyas down the line?

If I understand you right, you have created a volume on the iSCSI NAS and have mounted it as block volume with a normal drive letter in Windows and then formated it with ReFS (or NTFS) to be able to write files to it.

Basically the Backup Server interacts with the volume then and it is the only one that can see this volume. This is a normal scenario and the only way block volume access works (we do not support clustered volume filesystems). So it is a regular setup and no change needed.

Yes, your understanding is exactly right. Thank you for the confirmation - I was concerned that perhaps the components that get installed on the virtual host might want to write to the repository directly for efficiency reasons.
