Restore SQL Transaction Log

Post by angtl91 »

We have enabled transaction log backup every 1 hour and the daily VM backup was scheduled at 8pm. When I'm trying to restore 1 hour ago transaction log it's not available.

e.g:
Monday 8pm - backup taken
Tuesday 2pm - trying to restore 1pm transaction log, but not available. The latest restore period is sunday 8pm to monday 8pm.

Is that means i need manual start the backup job in order to restore the transaction log for 1pm?

Hi Alan

First, make sure that you keep the log Backup longer than only a day. This is configured here.
Either use Until the corresponding image-level backup is deleted or Keep only last <N> days of log backups to configure the retention of the log backups.

When you have more than 1 days of logs, then you have to choose the correct restore point for the restore. If you say, you only see a timeline from sunday 8pm to monday 8pm, do you have chosen to use the sunday 8pm restore point for the sql restore?

Can you choose the saturday 8pm restore point and check again? You should be able to restore the sql database between saturday 8pm and sunday 8pm.

It all depends on choosing the right restore point and the log retention.
